ST. DAVIDS, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Soccer and the Eastern University Eagles battled in a physical game on Wednesday afternoon that remained scoreless for the first 89 minutes of action. However, with 51 seconds remaining, Eastern knocked in the game-winner from close-range.
Swarthmore's season record evened out at 3-3 with the loss while Eastern improved to 5-0-1.
The Garnet placed six shots on goal in the game and had one second-half shot ping off the post.
Wyatt McCall and
Omri Gal put shots on goal shortly after the midway point in the first half. Gal had another chance in the 51st minute but was denied by Eastern's Quentin Keibler. The Garnet continued to keep the pressure up and earned a dangerous free kick in the 52nd minute. McCall lined up over the ball on a restart 25 yards out and curled it around Eastern's wall. The shot had enough pace, but collided with the right post and ricocheted harmlessly out-of-bounds.
Then at the end of the 53rd minute,
Billy Evers attempted to redirect a pass slid into the middle of the box from Gal, but his shot was pushed out-of-play by Kiebler.
Swarthmore senior goalkeeper
Tyler Zon also recorded six saves.
With the game poised to go into extra time, Eastern broke the scoreless tie with a cross that found its way from the right side of the box to the left side of the six where Eastern's Jadon Ramsing finished an off-balance shot that slipped through the narrow space between
Ryan Meuth and Zon and into the right side of the net.
The Garnet had one last attempt in the game's final seconds, with Meuth booming a ball from beyond midfield in towards the box. The Garnet cleared the net and had Zon all the way up in Eastern's box in an attempt to win the header. The second ball bounced out to McCall about 30 yards out. He quickly fired the ball back in, but the last-second attempt was knocked away as the final buzzer sounded.
Swarthmore's Centennial Conference schedule begins on Saturday with a road match at No. 4 Franklin & Marshall College.
