WILKES-BARRE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Soccer won its third consecutive game, defeating the Wilkes University Colonels 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Michael Nafziger scored the game-winner in the 59th minute, finishing a free kick by
Wyatt McCall that was served into the box from near midfield.
The pass sailed long towards the endline but was played back into the box by Alec McLean. "It was very difficult for their goalkeeper and defenders when the ball was coming from their endline back into the box, and Michael (Nafziger) was just there to literally run it into the goal," Garnet head coach
Eric Wagner said. "He just had to get his body on it because it was right it the goalmouth. It's what we call bundling a goal in."
Nafziger's bundle was one of 24 shots for the Garnet. The Garnet have had their share of attempts on goal this season, but are still looking for a breakout scorer. "Right now we've got a defender leading the team in goal scoring (
Ryan Meuth) and that's from the penalty spot," Wagner said. "We got one of our attackers on the board today,
Michael Nafziger, who has arguably been our best player so far this season overall consistently, so we're looking to getting our attacking players more and more on the board."
Swarthmore's defense stifled the Colonels and held them to just four shots on the day. The Garnet also dominated in the amount of corner kicks earned, taking 12 to Wilkes' zero.
The Garnet improved to 3-2 on the season and handed the Colonels their fourth straight loss. Sophomore goalkeeper
Ross Bednar earned the clean sheet and only needed to record one save in the win. Bednar is the third different goalkeeper in three games to take the field as a starter for the Garnet. Coach Wagner has used the past two non-conference games to get a good look at what his reserve goalkeepers can offer. The starting job still belongs to senior
Tyler Zon. "We have three very competent goalies and we want to see what they're all capable of doing," Wagner said.
Saturday was the first of four consecutive games on the road for the Garnet. The road trip continues on Wednesday at Eastern University with a 4:15 game.
