Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Garnet Overwhelm Mighty Macs

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Field Hockey earned its first win of the 2015 season, knocking down the Immaculata University Mighty Macs 8-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Swarthmore pelted Immaculata with 32 shots and held Immaculata to just three attempts on the day. Forwards Erin Gluck and Clare Perez led the Garnet with two goals each. Ursula Monaghan, Katherine Ianni, Jordyn Bell and Julia Thomas all scored in the win. Thomas led the Garnet with two assists.

Immaculata surprised Swarthmore with a goal less than 90 seconds into the contest. The Garnet responded in the eighth minute. Thomas brought the ball into the circle and found Perez slashing through the middle. Perez snapped a shot to the far lower left corner of the cage to even the count 1-1.

The Mighty Macs regained the lead in the 24th minute, but a tip-in in the 29th minute by Erin Gluck after a long pass from Riya Garg on the outside evened the score again. From there, the Garnet didn't look back.

Gluck scored her second goal five minutes later to give Swarthmore its first lead. Gluck created her own opportunity, beating the last line of defense on the left side and firing off a shot to the opposite corner of the cage.

Bell made it a 4-2 game early in the 38th minute, redirecting a shot hit from Thomas near the edge of the circle. The Garnet had a 13 minute lull in their scoring, but then went on to score four more times in the next 10 minutes. Ianni slapped home a goal off a penalty corner 51st minute. Monaghan finished a spin move and then lofted in a goal in the 55th minute. Perez scored in the 58th minute on an assist by Kathleen Carmichael and then Thomas added the game's final goal in the 60th minute on a laser from near the edge of the circle.

The Garnet scored eight goals once last season, reaching that mark against Bryn Mawr College.

Swarthmore's next game is at nearby Neumann University for a 4:30 game on Wednesday.
