MADISON, N.J.—Playing from behind in the second half, Swarthmore College Men's College fired off eight of its 11 shots in the latter period but couldn't find the equalizer. The Garnet slipped on the road at Drew University Tuesday night in the season opener, falling 1-0 to the Rangers.
Swarthmore forwards
Rodrigo Hernandez and
Jesse Kusimba each put two shots on goal, and
Michael Swantek and Alec McLean had one shot on goal apiece.
Drew put five shots on target and headed in the difference-maker in the 40th minute. Ranger Eduardo Martinez finished a ball lobbed into the box off a set piece, placing the header past Garnet senior goalkeeper
Tyler Zon. Zon faced 12 shots in the setback.
Swarthmore pressured Drew in the second half and generated opportunities by getting balls to the feet of forwards or putting balls into the box on restarts. In the 62nd minute, Hernandez received the ball near the top of the box on the run, but Drew's keeper John Marques deflected the chance. Kusimba followed up the rebound but was denied as well. Kusimba's chance 30 seconds later was rejected too. Marques finished with six saves.
Swarthmore had opportunities in the 78th and 79th minutes but McLean's attempt to finish a bouncing ball in the box was stopped and
Billy Evers' shot hooked left of the pipe. Swantek took one last attempt at an equalizer in the 87th minute. His shot was pushed harmlessly around the pole.
The Garnet return home for two games this weekend, hosting Cabrini College on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Kean on Sunday at 4 p.m.
