ROSEMONT, Pa. – A potential game-tying three-pointer was off the mark as the Swarthmore College women's basketball team (3-5) dropped a non-conference road game to the Rosemont Ravens (3-4) by a 59-62 score on Thursday, Dec. 10.
Junior
Maggie O'Neil scored a game-high 17 points and added four blocks, four rebounds and two steals. Senior
Jessica Jowdy filled the box score with 14 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals while classmate
Abbey Deckard completed the double-double on 10 points and 12 rebounds. Deckard was also active on defense, snatching five steals and swatting three blocks in the game.
Swarthmore held a slight rebounding advantage at 54-51, which included 25 on the offensive glass. Sophomore
Bridget Scott accounted for six of those and grabbed nine total rebounds in 13 minutes.
After struggling on offense in the first half, the Garnet came out strong with 25 points in the third quarter. Swarthmore opened on a 5-0 run on baskets by O'Neil and Jowdy, who combined for 17 points in the period, and trimmed its deficit to three with just under five minutes remaining. Rosemont, however, used a balanced scoring attack and six free throws in the frame to take a 51-42 lead into the fourth.
The Garnet outscored the Ravens 17-11 in the final period and came within three after
Kemi Oladipo made a layup at 3:06. Deckard answered a Rosemont trey with one of her own, but Swarthmore could not erase its deficit down the stretch.
The women's basketball team resumes competition in 2016 when it travels Roanoke College for the Holiday Inn Classic on Jan. 2-3. The Garnet take on the hosts at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.
