NCAA SELECTION SHOW LINKSWARTHMORE, Pa. – Freshman forward
Marin McCoy scored in the sixth minute of the Centennial Conference championship for the No. 12 Swarthmore College women's soccer team (16-2-1), but the homestanding Garnet could not hold off the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays (14-4-1), who prevailed in double overtime by a 2-1 score.
With the goal, McCoy recorded her 38th point of the season, breaking the previous program record of 37 set by Katie Kanuka in 2006.
Hopkins' Meg Van de Loo netted the game-winning goal in the 102nd minute and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player for her performance.
Swarthmore got on the board early at 5:23 when senior defender
Emily Telford-Marx expertly played a lob to McCoy, who earned a breakaway and beat keeper Clara Aranguren for a 1-0 lead. The Garnet continued to press for a second goal in the half, but a high back line from Hopkins combined with aggressive defending from Aranguren kept Swarthmore's advantage at one.
Senior keeper
Reba Magier made two saves in the half and center backs Telford-Marx and
Amanda Bosworth were solid in the middle, cutting out several runs by the Blue Jays. Freshman
Melissa Curran was also stalwart for the Garnet defense as was junior
Katherine Zavez, who used great speed and determination to stop a Hopkins attack up the left side in the 34th minute.
"Our women played their hearts out today," said head coach
Todd Anckaitis."They work hard every day for each other and to make everyone associated with the program proud. They did that today regardless of the result."
The second half was a nail-biter and opened with a threatening, bouncing ball in the Hopkins box that was eventually claimed by Aranguren. Shortly after, McCoy put another shot toward goal and Swarthmore earned a corner kick, but could not convert for a 2-0 lead. Hopkins answered with a corner of its own on the other end and headed in the equalizer at 57:38 when an apparent save by Magier was ruled a goal.
Swarthmore nearly regained its lead a few minutes later when a failed header by a Hopkins defender led to a scramble in front of net with Aranguren out of position, though the ball was eventually cleared to safety. Another opportunity came in the 79th minute when Bosworth's header off a corner kick was just wide of the Blue Jays' net.
Johns Hopkins earned a series of corner kicks in the final minutes of regulation and able defending from the Magier and the back line and a timely blocked shot helped bring the game into overtime.
In the first additional period, Swarthmore picked up an early corner kick and had a few promising opportunities, including threatening shots by McCoy and
Katie Dougherty, but could not find the back of the net. On defense, Telford-Marx continued her strong play into overtime by fending off a run from the Hopkins attack late. The Blue Jays came away with the victory, however, in the second period when Van de Loo scored on the far post at 101:46.
The Garnet faithful came out in droves for the afternoon's game, which was a rematch of the 2014 Centennial Conference championship won by Swarthmore in penalties.
"The fan support was amazing." Anckaitis said. "We couldn't have done it without the support of them, our soccer families and friends, sports information, and the training and equipment rooms."
Swarthmore is eligible for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and will be watching closely during the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, Nov. 9 at 1:00 p.m. EST. The link to the event can be found
