No. 10 Swarthmore Routs St. Joseph’s to Advance in NCAA Tournament

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Five different players scored for the 10th-ranked Swarthmore College women's soccer team (17-2-1) in its 5-2 victory over St. Joseph's (L.I.) (9-10-2) as the Garnet advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 14.

Swarthmore netted four goals in the second half to put away the visiting Golden Eagles, who qualified for the tournament as the Skyline Conference champions.

St. Joseph's took an early lead with a tally in the fourth minute, but the Garnet answered shortly after junior forward Hannah Lichtenstein converted a penalty kick 12:35 into the game. Swarthmore dictated the pace of play as Lichtenstein and sophomore forward Katie Dougherty each fired a pair of shots on goal in the half, though Golden Eagles' keeper Katie McGarell was solid in net to keep the game deadlocked at one.

McGarell made two saves in the early proceedings of the second period, but the floodgates opened for Swarthmore in the 64th minute when freshman leading scorer Marin McCoy received a through ball on the left wing from junior Caroline Khanna and curled the ball expertly into the middle of the net.

Less than three minutes later, Dougherty buried her 11th goal of the season after receiving a bouncing cross from Miranda Saldivar that the St. Joseph's defense failed to clear. Junior Mele Johnson added another marker for the Garnet, her sixth of the year, on a left-footed screamer to the upper left corner from outside of the box. In the 75th minute, sophomore Claire O'Brien took a through ball by Johnson and converted a breakaway to complete the scoring.

The Golden Eagles got a goal back at 78:33, but it was too little too late as their season came to an end in the program's first NCAA appearance.

Swarthmore will play the winner of No. 19 Ithaca and Catholic on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 5:00 p.m. on Clothier Field for a spot in the sectional round of the tournament.
