SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The 12th-ranked Swarthmore College women's soccer team (16-1-1) used three second-half goals in the span of just four minutes to bury the Ursinus Bears by a 3-0 score in the Centennial Conference semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 7.
Amanda Bosworth,
Katherine Zavez, and
Caroline Khanna all scored for Swarthmore, who will face Johns Hopkins in a rematch of the 2014 Centennial Conference championship which was won in penalties by the Garnet.
Swarthmore, the top seed and host of the tournament, dictated much of the play in the first half and had several promising scoring opportunities throughout the period, but was unable to find the back of the net. Senior
Melissa Trofa glanced the crossbar in the second minute and
Hannah Lichtenstein and
Katie Dougherty both put shots toward goal in the first 10 minutes of play.
Dougherty fired two more shots at the keeper in the 20th and 21st minutes as the Garnet maintained their relentless attack. Swarthmore outshot Ursinus 12-3 in the period, but the Bears had a late opportunity when a dangerous cross toward the back post was just ahead of a player making a run.
The second half belonged to the hosts with Bosworth starting the scoring early on a header from a corner kick by Trofa, who leads the Centennial Conference with 13 assists this season. Bosworth also became the 21st different player to score for Swarthmore in 2015.
Just over a minute later, Dougherty made a run toward goal, cut right, and slotted a pass on the wing to Zavez, who finished with well-placed ball off the far post for her third goal of the year.
At 52:24, Swarthmore increased its lead to three as Khanna found the back of the net.
Marin McCoy started the play with a header to Lichtenstein, whose shot off the post bounced toward Khanna for an open-net goal off the rebound.
Senior
Reba Magier made four saves, all in the second half, for her eighth clean sheet of the season. Swarthmore has conceded only two goals to Centennial opponents this season and has posted 15 shutouts in 18 total games.
The Garnet face off against Johns Hopkins at 2:00 p.m. on Clothier Field for the 2015 Centennial Conference championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Swarthmore triumphed by a 2-1 score on the road in the teams' matchup earlier this season.
