COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's basketball team (1-3, 0-1 CC) fell to Ursinus (1-3,1-0 CC) in its Centennial Conference opener by a 56-67 score on the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 24. The Garnet shrank the deficit to two with six and a half minutes remaining in the game, but could not catch up to the Bears down the stretch.
Junior
Maggie O'Neil recorded her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds while chipping in five blocks as well. Senior
Jessica Jowdy scored a team-high 14 points and sophomore
Hayley Raymond also finished in double figures with 10 points. Swarthmore limited Ursinus to a 2-of-14 mark from beyond the arc and has held opponents to 21 percent on three-point field goals this season.
Ursinus held a 29-14 advantage with 3:47 left in the second quarter, but the Garnet scored nine consecutive points to close the gap to six heading into the break. Jowdy scored two baskets as O'Neil, Raymond, and
Kayla Sembly sank free throws.
Abbey Deckard completed the scoring with six seconds remaining in the half.
The Bears led 49-43 with 7:27 in the fourth as Swarthmore answered with a pair of free throws from Jowdy and a layup by O'Neil. Ursinus gained breathing room after scoring seven consecutive points and held on for the win at home.
Swarthmore next competes on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 6:00 p.m. in a conference clash against Washington College in the friendly confines of Tarble Pavilion.
