SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Sophomore
Bridget Scott scored a career-high 15 points off the bench on only six shots as the Swarthmore College women's basketball team (2-3, 1-1 CC) earned a 61-49 Centennial Conference win over visiting Washington College (1-2, 0-1 CC) on Tuesday, Dec. 1.
Scott finished 9-of-13 from the free throw line and grabbed six rebounds, including three on the offensive glass.
Senior
Jessica Jowdy paced the Garnet with 17 points as
Abbey Deckard and
Melanie Ackerman chipped in nine and eight, respectively. Deckard also pulled down eight boards to lead all players while Jowdy,
Hayley Raymond, and
Jordyn Bell each dished out three assists.
The Shorewomen opened the game with an 8-3 lead, but a basket from
Kayla Sembly, and four free throws by Scott gave Swarthmore a 9-8 advantage with 3:24 remaining in the first. Although Washington College would pull ahead in the final minute of the period, a three by Ackerman with less than a second remaining knotted the game at 16 apiece.
Jowdy took over in the second with 11 of Swarthmore's 19 points and the Garnet limited the Shorewomen to only eight points. Washington's offense, which entered the game averaging nine three-pointers per contest, was limited to a 23.5 percent clip from beyond the arc on 4-of-17 shooting.
Jowdy scored five more points to open the second half and consecutive baskets by
Maggie O'Neil give Swarthmore its largest lead of the night at 44-27 with 4:51 in the third. Washington managed to trim its deficit to 14 entering the fourth, but could not catch the Garnet and only once managed to decrease Swarthmore's lead to single digits.
The women's basketball team travels to Westminster, Md. on Saturday, Dec. 5 for a conference tilt with McDaniel at 1:00 p.m.
