SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Despite a strong start to the game, the Swarthmore College women's basketball team (1-2) could not come away with a win against the visiting Wesleyan Cardinals (2-0), falling 57-73 in the conclusion of the Swarthmore Tip-Off Classic.
Senior
Jessica Jowdy was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 19 points and 4.5 assists in two games this weekend. Jowdy recorded 16 of those points against the Cardinals and classmate
Abbey Deckard led the Garnet with 19 points and five three-pointers. Swarthmore shot 40 percent from beyond the arc with a 10-of-25 mark as
Melanie Ackerman also chipped in three for nine total points.
Jowdy started with the hot hand for the Garnet, recording the team's first seven points and 11 of its 19 in the first quarter. Deckard opened the second quarter with a trey to give Swarthmore a nine-point lead at 22-13 and Wesleyan answered shortly after with a three of its own. The Cardinals eventually lowered their deficit to four with 3:46 remaining, though
Bridget Scott gave the Garnet some breathing room by converting a three-point play. Free throws by
Kayla Sembly and another Deckard three put Swarthmore ahead 36-27 in the final minute of the quarter, but a converted and-one shrank that lead to six heading into the break.
Wesleyan used a strong third quarter to gain the lead and held a 52-45 advantage in the final minute of the period before Deckard's three-point play cut the lead to four. Swarthmore would get within one in the fourth another trey from Deckard, but could not catch and overtake the Cardinals.
The women's basketball team plays its Centennial Conference opener on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 6:00 p.m. when it travels to Ursinus in Collegeville, Pa.
