SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Behind a career-high 34 points from sophomore guard
Zack Yonda, Swarthmore College Men's Basketball improved to 2-0 with an 80-66 win over Centenary College (N.J.) on Saturday afternoon.
Yonda, whose previous career high had been 32 points, shot 11-for-18 (61.1 percent) from the floor, including going 4-for-7 from long-range. He added eight points from the free-throw line as well. Point guard
Matt Brennan also reached double digits, sinking 5-of-8 field goal attempts for 14 points.
Chris Bourne added 13 points and also collected 13 rebounds to complete the double-double. Bourne's boards helped Swarthmore have the edge over Centenary in the rebounding category 37-32.
Overall, the Garnet shot 49.1 percent from the floor and 43.5 percent from beyond the arc. Centenary checked in at 40 percent overall.
Swarthmore sprung out to a 13-point run six minutes into the first half, building a 15-point lead with 11:00 to go following a
Matt Brennan layup.
Sam Lebryk and Brennan later knocked down 3-pointers to give Swarthmore its largest lead of the game, a 20-point margin with 5:08 to go in the opening period. Centenary pulled within 14 with 52 seconds to go until halftime, but a trey by Yonda and a banked-jumper by freshman
Christian Rhodes (his first collegiate points) with under a second left helped give Swarthmore some more breathing room going into halftime.
Swarthmore's lead again reached 20 points in the second half, but a Centenary run starting with 13:43 to play led to Swarthmore's lead being cut to just eight.
Two 3-pointers by Yonda followed by one from
Jim Lammers helped put the game out of reach with 5:42 to play and the Garnet closed out the game for their second straight win to start the 2015-16 season.
Swarthmore hits the road on Tuesday when it plays at Ursinus College.
