COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Basketball used an 11-0 run to overtake the Ursinus College Bears in the second half Tuesday night and fought off the Bears' comeback attempt to win the Centennial Conference opener.
The Swarthmore Garnet improved to 3-0 to start the season with the 63-58 win. Ursinus dipped to 1-2 on the year.
Matt Brennan scored a game-high 21 points, including scoring seven straight points in a 70-second span that started with 2:39 left in the game. Brennan was the only Garnet player in double-digits, but
Zack Yonda,
Robbie Walsh and
Michael Rubayo each scored eight points. Freshman
Christian Rhodes added six points in the second half.
After a back-and-forth first half, both teams started the second half with a scoring dry spell. In the first six minutes, Swarthmore scored just four points and Ursinus only scored two, and the score was knotted at 33-33. Ursinus took a four-point lead, but with 10:44 to go, Brennan knocked down a 3-pointer, one of his four treys on the day, to pull Swarthmore within one.
Rhodes put Swarthmore in the lead on the next possession, grabbing a defensive rebound and dribbling coast-to-coast for the layup. Two minutes later, Rhodes drew a double team on the left block and dished a quick pass to the right block to find an open
Sean Thaxter for the layup. A Rhodes layup with 8:02 to play capped an 11-0 run for the Garnet and gave Swarthmore a 49-42 lead.
Ursinus caught Swarthmore at 51-51 with 4:53 to go and led by one with 2:19 to play. Brennan returned the lead to Swarthmore with a 3-pointer from the top of the arc on the next possession and then extended Swarthmore's lead to 59-55 with 1:29 left on a turn-around floater after cutting through the paint.
Zack Yonda sank four free throws down the stretch to seal the game.
Swarthmore plays at home on Saturday against Cairn University.
