No. 14 Women’s Soccer Clinches Top Seed in Win Over Fords

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The 14th-ranked Swarthmore College women's soccer team (15-1-1, 9-0-1 CC) capped off its regular season on Saturday, Oct. 31 with a 1-0 win over local rival Haverford College (11-5-1, 4-5-1 CC). The Garnet finished the campaign undefeated in Centennial competition and have won the right to host the conference postseason tournament as the top-seeded team.

Hannah Lichtenstein recorded her 11th goal of the year and Reba Magier made four saves for her seventh shutout of 2015. Swarthmore has conceded only two goals to Centennial opponents this season, outscoring its foes 28-2 in the process, and has not lost a conference game since Oct. 22, 2014.

Marin McCoy put a shot on goal in the first minute of the match as the Garnet began on the offensive. Not long after, Lichtenstein tallied the eventual game-winner on a well-placed shot to the left corner from 30 yards out.

Swarthmore nearly doubled its lead in the 74th minute when it earned a corner kick at 73:36 and got off two promising shots from the set piece, one by freshman Caroline Meier and another from junior Mele Johnson, though both were turned away by the Fords. The Garnet showcased their depth as 20 different players took the field during the course of the match.

Swarthmore will play the winner of the first round match between Ursinus and Gettysburg scheduled to take place at the higher seed on Wednesday, Nov. 4. The semifinal and final games, which will be hosted at Clothier Field on the campus of Swarthmore College, are set for Nov. 7 and Nov. 8, respectively, at times yet to be determined.
