BALTIMORE – For the first time in over 20 years, the Swarthmore College volleyball team (13-3, 3-0 CC) picked up a road win at Johns Hopkins (7-9, 3-1 CC) with a 3-1 victory against the Blue Jays on Saturday, Oct. 3. The visiting Garnet won by a 15-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-20 score to remain undefeated in their last 12 matches.
Sophomore outside hitter
Sarah Wallace swung 15 kills and only one error in 36 attempts for a hitting percentage of .389 and
Malia Scott recorded five service aces and 14 digs.
Sarah Girard and
Sam DuBois also finished in double figures for digs with 15 and 10, respectively, while
Madison Heppe was just short with nine. DuBois completed the double-double with 27 assists and now sits at 2,495 for her career.
Olivia Leventhal also tallied 10 kills while
Alice Liu contributed two block assists.
After dropping the first set, Swarthmore came out strong in the second by taking the first five points and later ended the frame on the kill by DuBois. The Garnet carried the momentum into the third when they hit a blistering .414 with 13 kills and a single error.
In the decisive fourth set, the Garnet rushed out to a 14-3 lead and held off a late charge by the Blue Jays to win the match.
Swarthmore sits alone atop the conference standings as the only team without a loss in Centennial competition. The team looks to extend its win streak to 13 matches when it hosts Washington College in Tarble Pavilion on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 7:00 p.m.
