BALTIMORE –
Katherine Zavez's first career goal came at the perfect time as the visiting Swarthmore College women's soccer team (9-0, 3-0 CC) beat Johns Hopkins (6-3-1, 2-1 CC) by a 2-1 score on Saturday, Oct. 3. Zavez scored in the 53rd minute off a pass from
Marin McCoy to break the deadlock and put the Garnet ahead for good.
It was a rematch of the 2014 Centennial Conference final when Swarthmore won on penalties to claim its first conference title and appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Senior keeper
Reba Magier made a last-second save, one of her four in the game, to preserve the win for the Garnet, which have not lost a conference match since Oct. 22, 2014 and have outscored Centennial opponents 23-4 over that stretch.
Swarthmore, which entered Saturday's game as the only NCAA women's soccer team yet to allow a goal during the 2015 season, conceded in the sixth minute of the match. The shutout streak lasted just over 725 minutes, a program-best mark.
The Garnet remained unfazed by the early deficit and challenged Hopkins keeper Clara Aranguren with several shots toward net by McCoy and
Hannah Lichtenstein early in the half. Junior
Caroline Khanna also registered a shot on goal at 21:36 as Swarthmore stayed on the offensive.
"I was impressed with how [Hopkins] took us out of our game in the first five minutes," said head coach
Todd Anckaitis. "They're a good side, but our team fought hard to solve the problems they presented and eventually worked through them. It's a good road win even though we didn't play our best. It showed our team has the guts to play through the games when we're not on form."
Nine minutes after entering the game in the 36
th minute, substitute
Sarah Hancock scored the equalizer right before the half, finishing a long cross from Lichtenstein with a one timer past Aranguren.
Swarthmore jumped out ahead early in the second frame on Zavez's goal from the top of the box at 52:54. The junior defender became the 20
th different player to score for the Garnet this season, which is averaging 5.89 goals per game and led Division III in the most recent statistical rankings. The visitors put two more shots on goal over the course of the game to finish with nine.
"It was good to see other players step up and execute," Anckaitis said. "We have the depth to do it and [Zavez] and Hancock proved that again. Today, it was them; tomorrow, it will be someone else. The win was a real team effort."
The women's soccer team will put its unblemished record on the line when it returns to the friendly confines of Clothier Field for a conference match against Washington College on Wednesday, Oct. 7. Action begins at 7:30 p.m.
