Swarthmore Lights Up Scoreboard with 5-0 Win

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – A light outage could not stop the 20th-ranked Swarthmore College women's soccer team (10-0, 4-0 CC)  as it remained unbeaten with a 5-0 win over Washington College on Wednesday, Oct. 7. The game was called in the 72nd minute due to an electrical issue, but was declared an official contest after passing the 70 minute mark.

Marin McCoy found the back of the net twice and added an assist while Caroline Khanna, Katie Dougherty, and Mele Johnson also tallied goals for the Garnet. Melissa Trofa and Hannah Lichtenstein, who entered the game ranked near the top of Division III in assists, each added their ninth helper of the season.

The Swarthmore defense was stalwart throughout the night as it posted its ninth clean sheet of the year, allowing two total shots, neither of which were on goal.

Lichtenstein nearly put the Garnet ahead in the third minute with a close-range shot, but was denied by the Washington keeper. The junior forward followed up shortly after with a through ball to McCoy, who slotted it home to give Swarthmore a 1-0 lead.

Five minutes later, McCoy notched her team-leading 11th goal of the season with a header off a Trofa corner kick. The freshman from Denver, Col. nearly completed the hat-trick in the 25th minute, but her header glanced the crossbar and went over the net.

In the second half, Swarthmore used two quick goals to bury the Shorewomen. Khanna cleaned up a loose ball with a shot in the upper right corner and Dougherty finished a pass from McCoy on the near post for her sixth goal of the campaign. Johnson completed the scoring with a well-struck free kick from about 25 yards out.

The Garnet remain at home for a conference tilt against Gettysburg on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 5:00 p.m.
