COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.—In a Centennial Conference men's soccer game that went the full 110 minutes, regulation plus two periods of extra time, both of Saturday's goals were recorded in the first four minutes of the contest.
The Swarthmore College Garnet (4-6-1, 1-2-1 Centennial) and the Ursinus Bears (1-5-3, 0-2-2) concluded Saturday's game with a 1-1 draw.
The Bears went on the board first, just 1:20 into the game. Ursinus' Ryan Butler corralled a through-ball from Dean DerSimonian and put home the game's first goal.
The sudden goal didn't leave the Garnet shell-shocked and they responded in the beginning of the fourth minute. Center back
Ryan Meuth lined up on a restart about 30 yards out and sent the free kick into the box, and
Billy Evers located the pass and headed it in for the equalizer. The goal is Evers' first this season.
Swarthmore pressured for a go-ahead goal, taking 19 more shots, 11 on goal, throughout the course of the game. Ursinus countered with 14 shots, six in each of the first two periods and then one in each of the extra periods. Swarthmore's
Tyler Zon recorded four saves, and the Garnet tabbed a team-save in the 36th minute to fend off a header off a Bears' corner.
In extra time, the Garnet's
Ryan Meuth put a shot on goal early in the first period but was denied by the keeper. The Garnet had one shot go off the outside of the net in the second overtime period and had a counter-attack opportunity in the closing minute, but the game stayed knotted at 1-1 until the final buzzer.
Swarthmore hosts Rowan University on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in a non-conference game.
