SWARTHMORE, Pa.-Swarthmore College Men's Soccer needed a win on Wednesday night to keep its playoff dreams alive, and despite the steady downpour and gusty winds, the Garnet took care of business, clipping the Washington College Shoremen 1-0.
Swarthmore freshman
Cameron Ricciardi scored the game-winner in the 55th minute to elevate the Garnet's overall record to .500 overall (7-7-3) and more importantly, to 3-2-3 in the Centennial Conference. With that record, the Garnet have accumulated 12 points in the standings (3 for a win, 1 for a tie) and are tied for third place with Dickinson (3-1-3). Five Centennial teams make the postseason tournament.
The Garnet and Shoremen played to a scoreless first half. Senior goalkeeper
Tyler Zon recorded two first half saves to go along with a handful of parries on balls served into the box on Washington restarts and an important stop in the 43rd minute when he took the ball off the feet of a Washington forward on a play in the box. Zon finished with three saves and the win.
Early in the second half, the Garnet drew a foul just outside the box and to the left.
Ryan Meuth sent a low kick around the wall into
Ryan Ward who was off the left post near the six. Ward took a shot with his heel that bounced up and hit the crossbar. Ricciardi corralled the rebound and took a shot but had that blocked. Ricciardi immediately followed with another shot to finish off the scrum in front of the net and slipped the attempt past the goalkeeper.
With the 1-0 lead intact, Swarthmore fended off the Shoremen the rest of the way to hold onto the conference win.
The Garnet wrap up the regular season on Saturday at Haverford College at 3:30 p.m.
