ST. DAVID'S, Pa. – On Saturday, Oct. 24, the Swarthmore College volleyball team (18-7) fell by 3-0 scores to Susquehanna and 14th-ranked Eastern on the final day of the Eastern Quad-Match.
The Garnet opened the afternoon with a 21-25, 17-25, 23-25 loss to the Crusaders of Susquehanna University, which received votes in the most recent AVCA national poll of coaches.
Freshman
Sarah Girard and senior
Madison Heppe compiled double-digit digs with 11 and 10, respectively, while senior
Sam DuBois handed out 21 assists for the Garnet.
Sarah Wallace and
Alice Liu each recorded solo blocks and Wallace chipped in a block assist as well.
Against 14th-ranked Eastern, Swarthmore played tough, but ultimately fell 19-25, 16-25, 17-25. In the first set, the Garnet claimed four of the first five points and hung with the Eagles throughout. Eastern pulled away with a four-point run at 17-16 and would go on to take a 1-0 lead.
The teams traded points in the second until Eastern used an eight-point streak to put the set out of reach. The Garnet defense limited the Eagles to a .083 hitting percentage in the third, its worst mark of the weekend.
Malia Scott totaled six kills, seven digs, two services aces, and a block assist in the match and Heppe added seven more digs to her total. Wallace finished with a team-high nine digs and served two aces as well.
The volleyball team will celebrate its Senior Day on Tuesday, Oct. 27 during a conference match against Bryn Mawr at 7:00 p.m. The three members of the Class of 2016 are Heppe, DuBois, and
Anastasia White-Torruellas.
