Swarthmore Celebrates Senior Day in Sweep of Bryn Mawr

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College volleyball team (19-7, 8-1 CC) celebrated its Senior Day in style with a 3-0 win over Bryn Mawr (6-15, 1-8 CC) on Tuesday, Oct. 27. The Garnet defeated the Owls by a 25-15, 25-21, 25-12 score in a contest that lasted just over an hour.

Prior to the match, the team recognized the contributions and accomplishments of the three members of its senior class: Sam DuBois, Madison Heppe, and Anastasia White-Torruellas.

Swarthmore served up 12 aces, including seven in the first set, and recorded a .306 hitting percentage with 42 kills and 12 errors in 98 attempts. Sophomore Olivia Leventhal hit .517 with 17 kills and Malia Scott recorded a near double-double behind 13 assists and nine digs. DuBois was also close with eight digs and a match-high 27 assists. Sarah Girard and Sarah Wallace totaled seven digs apiece and Heppe led the Garnet with 10 in that category.

The first set was closely contested until 11-10 when Swarthmore took 10 of the next 11 points, punctuated by two aces each from Wallace and Heppe, to bury Bryn Mawr. In the second, the Garnet limited the Owls to a .111 hitting percentage as Wallace and Leventhal combined for 11 kills and Heppe totaled seven digs in the set.

Swarthmore saved its best for last, hitting .394 in the third with 15 kills and only two errors. The Garnet rushed out to a 15-6 lead to force an Owls' timeout and never led by fewer than eight points for the remainder of the set.

The team has already clinched a berth in the Centennial Conference playoffs and sits atop the conference standings at 8-1. A win over rival Haverford on Saturday, Oct. 31 will secure Swarthmore the right to host the conference semifinal and final matches.
