SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Soccer returned to fifth place in the Centennial Conference standings after playing Dickinson College to a 1-1 draw on Saturday night.
Michael Nafziger scored the Garnet's goal in the 59th minute.
Swarthmore entered Saturday's contest in sixth place in the standings, vying for the fifth and final postseason tournament seed. With the draw, Swarthmore's record now sits at 2-2-3 in Centennial play with just two games remaining. Swarthmore has Washington College at home on Wednesday at 7:30 and then closes out the regular season with the newly-appointed top seed in the conference, Haverford, next Saturday.
Dickinson and Swarthmore went the first half without putting a shot on goal. However, the Red Devils tested the Garnet with eight attempts, including one that pinged off the crossbar. The Garnet generated scoring opportunities early in the second half with forward
Billy Evers putting two shots on goal in the first 14 minutes of the period. Following his second saved shot, Evers took a corner kick and found Nafziger in the box towards the right post. Nafziger snapped a header into the right side of the goal to put Swarthmore ahead 1-0.
With less than eight minutes remaining in the game, a foul call set up a dangerous restart for the Red Devils who capitalized on the situation. The pass was served into the box, finding the foot of Dickinson's Ward Van de Water who quickly spun and fired the equalizer.
Swarthmore put two shots on goal in the final minutes of regulations, but couldn't break the deadlock. The Garnet defense fended off four Red Devils' corner kick plays early in the first overtime period. Swarthmore took two more shots on goal in the second overtime, but neither found their way home and the game ended 1-1.
