ST. DAVID'S, Pa. – The Stockton University Ospreys (25-2) proved to be too much for the Swarthmore College volleyball team (18-5) on Friday afternoon as the Garnet fell in three sets by a 21-25, 12-25, 21-25 score in the first contest of the Eastern University Quad-Match.
Stockton received 29 votes in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Coaches Top 25 Poll and was ranked second in the New York region by the NCAA.
For the Garnet,
Sarah Girard recorded a team-high nine digs, while
Sam DuBois and
Malia Scott were close behind with eight apiece. DuBois also added 19 assists and four kills as
Olivia Leventhal swung a team-leading nine kills for Swarthmore.
The first set featured 11 ties and four lead changes with the Garnet ahead by a 21-20 count late in the frame. Unfortunately, the Ospreys unleashed a five-point run to take the set and carried their momentum into the second.
Swarthmore posted a very respectable .353 hitting percentage in the third set, but Stockton hit at a .529 clip with 20 kills and two errors to close out the match. After falling behind 15-10, the Garnet took five straight to even the set and traded with the Ospreys down the stretch until 21-20 when Stockton leveraged a three-point run to match point. Swarthmore saved one, but couldn't stave off elimination as it fell to 18-5 on the season.
The volleyball team faces two more tough opponents on Saturday, Oct. 23 with matches against Susquehanna and Eastern at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m., respectively. Susquehanna received two votes in this week's AVCA poll and Eastern sits at No. 14 in the nation.
