No. 13 Women’s Soccer Blanks Mules, Secures Postseason Berth

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore Katie Dougherty tallied three points with a goal and an assist as the 13th-ranked Swarthmore College women's soccer team (13-0-1, 7-0-1 CC) clinched a spot in the Centennial Conference tournament with a 2-0 win over Muhlenberg on Wednesday, Oct. 21.

It is the seventh time in the past nine years that the team has qualified for the conference tournament. In addition, the Garnet have not lost a conference match in 365 days and have outscored Centennial opponents 35-5 over that stretch.

With 22 points, the Garnet have guaranteed themselves a place in the semifinals  as Johns Hopkins and McDaniel are the only remaining teams that can finish above that total. Swarthmore also owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over Gettysburg, which can reach 22 points by winning its three remaining Centennial games.

Against the Mules, the Garnet got on the board early with Dougherty striking for her eighth goal of the season in the third minute. The sophomore forward finished in the low left corner of the net after receiving a through ball from Caroline Khanna.

Just 10 minutes later, Hannah Lichtenstein doubled the visitors' advantage to 2-0 by finishing a Dougherty ball played from the end line. Shortly after, Swarthmore almost went up by three, but a shot by Aine Schanche was saved by the Muhlenberg keeper. Schanche was active on both ends of the field as she helped pace a backline that posted its 12th clean sheet of the season.

Key defensive reserves Cappy Pitts and Kayla Handel also drew praise from head coach Todd Anckaitis for their hard-nosed play in the shutout win.

Swarthmore continued their offensive in the second period with early shots on goal from Lichtenstein and Marin McCoy. Freshman Caroline Coats also provided pressure against the Mules' backline and registered a shot on target in the 75th minute.

The women's soccer team will play its last non-conference game of the season on Saturday, Oct. 24 when it hosts Montclair State at 3:00 p.m. The nine members of the Class of 2016 will be honored during the match, which also coincides with the College's Garnet Weekend festivities.
