No. 13 Women’s Soccer Falls in Tough Battle on Senior Day

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The 13th-ranked Swarthmore College women's soccer team (13-1-1) was handed its first loss of the season on Saturday, Oct. 24 as the Garnet narrowly fell by a 1-0 score to the visiting Montclair State Red Hawks (13-2-2).

Prior to the match, Swarthmore recognized the contributions and accomplishments of the nine members of its senior class: Tazmin Bailiff-Curtis, Amanda Bosworth, Emily Gale, Caela Long, Reba Magier, Cappy Pitts, Aine Schanche, Emily Telford-Marx and Melissa Trofa.

The Red Hawks, who are ranked No. 19 by D3soccer.com and received votes in the latest NSCAA national poll, got on the board in the 15th minute with a header off of a free kick. Swarthmore dictated the pace of play for the remainder of the half and possessed the ball well in its offensive third, but could not find the back of the net.

In the second half, the Garnet continued on the offensive and outshot the Red Hawks 8-4. A promising opportunity came in the 56th minute on a free kick by Mele Johnson right outside the box, but Marin McCoy's header was just high of the net. Less than a minute later, an apparent goal was negated by an offsides call as Swarthmore pressed for the game-tying marker.

At 67:42, a threatening free kick from Johnson was saved by the Montclair keeper. Another opportunity came in the 69th minute when a wide shot by McCoy across the face of the goal nearly connected to a run from Katie Dougherty, who finished with five shots in the match. The sophomore forward continued to push for the equalizer and fired a shot wide of net the waning seconds of the game.

The last home game of the regular season will take place against Bryn Mawr on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 5:30 p.m.
