SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Soccer clipped the Rutgers-Camden Scarlet Raptors 1-0 on Wednesday evening after junior forward
Billy Evers scored the game-winner in the 74th minute.
Evers' goal to end the scoreless deadlock was his second tally this season. Midfielder
Michael Nafziger facilitated the score by chipping a pass to Evers from about 25 yards from goal. Evers then turned and cut back middle, creating enough space to launch a shot to the upper-right corner of the goal. The shot bent out of the reach of the goalkeeper's out-stretched hands and tucked into the goal's upper 90.
Much of the play in the first half involved battles for possession in the midfield, and each team only posted one shot on goal in the period. Evers had a running header to finish off a cross near the doorstep in the 16th minute of the first half, but the shot was denied.
Swarthmore goalkeeper
Tyler Zon earned the shutout, facing 16 shots and recording three saves. In addition to his three saves, Zon had several plays in the second half where he had to parry away a dangerous cross served in off a restart or corner kick. After securing the 1-0 lead late, Swarthmore protected the box and kept Rutgers-Camden off the board the rest of the way.
Swarthmore improves to 6-7-2 with the non-conference win and drops Rutgers-Camden to 9-7-1. The Garnet return to conference play on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Dickinson College at home.
