Zavez’s Late Goal Secures Tie for No. 18 Garnet

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Trailing 1-0 with just two seconds left in regulation, it appeared as if the 18th-ranked Swarthmore College women's soccer team (12-0-1, 6-0-1 CC) would suffer its first loss of the season at the hands of the McDaniel Green Terror (13-0-1, 5-0-1 CC) on Saturday, Oct. 17. Junior defender Katherine Zavez, however, delivered in the clutch with her second goal of the season to force overtime and the Garnet came away with a draw on the road.

Sophie Basalone helped set up the equalizer with a hard shot that was deflected by the keeper toward Zavez.

"I don't know that I've ever seen a goal scored so late in a game," said head coach Todd Anckaitis. "I'm proud of the grit and determination of the team today. They continued to push regardless of who was in the game and literally stayed in until the final whistle, never giving up and never giving in."

Earlier this year, Zavez scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 road win over Johns Hopkins on Oct. 3.

Senior goalkeeper Reba Magier made four saves, including two stops at the end of the first overtime period to preserve the 1-1 draw.

The teams entered the game as the only remaining squads in Division III women's soccer without a loss or tie this season.

Marin McCoy, who finished the match with five shots, had Swarthmore's first opportunity to score, but was denied by the McDaniel keeper in the fourth minute. Ten minutes later, the Green Terror took the lead on Kristen Upton's sixth goal of the season, which was a header off a deep free kick.

"McDaniel is really strong on set pieces and they had several opportunities throughout," Anckaitis said. "It was an area we hadn't really felt too much pressure in previously, but our team stood up to the challenge and that builds confidence."

Swarthmore outshot McDaniel 9-2 in the second period as it pressed for the equalizer. Basalone had a header toward goal in the 67th and McCoy hit the left post in the waning minutes of the match. On the opposite end, Magier came up with two late saves to keep the Garnet within striking distance.

A McDaniel foul with 12 seconds remaining set up a Swarthmore free kick and after a series of passes from Yasmeen Namazie, Aine Schanche, and Katie Dougherty, Basalone took a shot that was deflected to Zavez on the back post. The junior cleaned up the rebound to send the game into extra time.

The Swarthmore women's soccer team concludes its three-game road stand with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game against Muhlenberg on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
