COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Reigning Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week
Reba Magier made six saves as the 18th-ranked Swarthmore College women's soccer team (12-0, 6-0 CC) shut out Ursinus (9-4, 4-3 CC) by a 3-0 score on Wednesday, Oct. 14.
Marin McCoy continued her impressive rookie campaign with a goal and an assist in the contest. Her 33 points on 12 goals and nine assists is already the second-best total in program history and only four behind Katie Kanuka's mark of 37, which was set in 2006.
Katie Dougherty and
Caroline Khanna also found the back of the net for the Garnet, which put 11 shots on goal and took nine corner kicks to Bears' zero.
Swarthmore opened the game with a barrage of shots and corner kicks early in the proceeding. The contest remained scoreless until the 33rd minute when Dougherty scored her seventh goal of the season on a header from McCoy's throw-in. Ursinus looked for the equalizer just three minutes later, but was stonewalled by Magier, who has allowed only one goal this year.
Right before the end of the frame, McCoy nearly doubled Swarthmore's lead with a shot that found the post in the 44th minute. The freshman forward was not to be denied, however, and scored from 15 yards out less than two minutes into the second period.
Khanna added one more insurance goal at 60:31 when she took advantage of a scramble in front of the net after a corner by
Melissa Trofa to complete the scoring with her seventh tally of 2015. Trofa also earned her team-leading 10th assist on the play.
Magier made five stops in the second half en route to her fifth clean sheet of the season.
Swarthmore faces a road test on Saturday, Oct. 17 when it travels to Westminster, Md. to face McDaniel, the only other team in Division III women's soccer without a loss or tie this season. The high-stakes conference match begins at 1:00 p.m.
