BOX SCORE SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's tennis team (8-8, CC 7-2) qualified for the Centennial Conference Tournament with a 6-3 win over Haverford College at home on Wednesday, Apr. 23.
The Garnet executed a sweep of the doubles matches, gaining a 3-0 advantage going into singles. At No. 2 doubles, seniors
Katie Samuelson and
Brooke Wilkins earned the first point for the team, defeating Kate Donches and Robyn Himmelstein by a score of 8-3. Senior
Lia Carlson and freshman
Alli Wong followed with an 8-5 win at No. 1 against Caitlin Gallagher and Alex Ferrara. Junior
Gayatri Iyengar and sophomore
Jackie Lane completed the sweep with an 8-6 victory at No. 3.
Carlson, Wilkins, and Lane became double winners for the day, dominating their singles matches. At No. 1, Carlson handled Gallagher, dropping only two games in her 6-0, 6-2 win. Lane clinched the match at No. 6, dismissing Abbey Flynn, 6-2, 6-3. Picking up the team's sixth point, Wilkins notched a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 against Abby Payson.
Swarthmore will play its final regular season match on Saturday, Apr. 26 at Johns Hopkins University at 1:00 p.m. with Centennial Conference playoff implications on the line.
Notes: The Hood Trophy is a friendly competition between local rivals Haverford College and Swarthmore College ... The Fords and Garnet have battled for the trophy with head to head contests in varsity sports since the 1941-42 academic year ... After today's Swarthmore win in women's tennis, Haverford leads the race by a 9-3 score with six sports left to be played before the end of the spring ...
