Men's Tennis Blanks Muhlenberg, 9-0

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Without dropping a set, the Swarthmore College men's tennis team (5-5, 2-0 CC) picked up its second consecutive shutout win against Muhlenberg College at home on Wednesday, April 2.

The Garnet jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. Senior Anthony Collard and freshman Thomas Vernier defeated Ben Berkowitz and Eric Chavis at No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-2, and senior Christian Carcione and junior Irving Stone dominated David Woods and Derrick Eng at No. 3 doubles by a score of 8-0.

The Mules presented a challenge at No. 1 doubles, but the Garnet team of senior Max Kaye and junior Harrison Lands proved to be a bit sharper, winning in a tiebreak, 9-8 (4).

Capitalizing on the momentum of the doubles sweep, the Swarthmore men did not drop a set in all six singles matches. At No. 1, Collard completed his second win for the day, with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Daniel Lakham. Kaye also became a double winner when he dominated Jason Teitelbaum at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1.

At No. 3 singles, senior Preston Poon earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Berkowitz. Freshman John Larkin also notched a straight-set victory at No. 4, only losing one game in the process of defeating Chavis 6-1, 6-0. Following suit, Stone downed his opponent at No. 5, also only dropping one game in the process.

Sophomore Matt Hirsh completed the Garnet shutout with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Eng at No. 6 singles.

Swarthmore faces #5 Johns Hopkins tomorrow in Baltimore at 4:00 p.m.
