Women’s Tennis Drops First League Match to F&M

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's tennis team (5-7, CC 4-1) experienced its first conference loss at the hands of Franklin and Marshall by a narrow score of 5-4 on Saturday, April 12.
 
The Diplomats jumped to an early lead, winning two of the doubles matches. For the Garnet, senior Lia Carlson and freshman Alli Wong earned their fifth consecutive doubles win at No. 1 with an 8-6 defeat of CJ Rummelsburg and Anya Sahaydachny.
 
With strong performances in singles, the team nearly rallied to a victory. Carlson picked up her second win for the day, defeating Rummelsburg at No. 1 by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Senior Katie Samuelson added to the tally when she earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2. Senior Brooke Wilkins also posted a singles win, rebounding from a 2-5 deficit in the second set to defeat Gruensberg at No. 5, 6-3, 7-6 (6).
 
Franklin and Marshall secured wins at No. 3 and 6. With the match tied at 4-4, Megan Fitzmaurice clinched for the Diplomats at No. 4.
 
Swarthmore will have a week of preparation ahead of its next conference match against Bryn Mawr at home on Friday, April 18 at 4 p.m.
