SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Energized by a doubles sweep, the Swarthmore College women's tennis team (2-6) picked up a non-conference win against Christopher Newport University by a score of 7-2 at home on Saturday, March 29.
The doubles sweep began with junior
Gayatri Iyengar and sophomore
Jackie Lane soundly defeating Brooke Byrd and Kelsey Clarke at No. 3 doubles by a score of 8-3. Senior
Lia Carlson and freshman
Alli Wong followed with their win at No. 1 doubles, beating Jodi Noland and Katie Carlson 8-5.
At No. 2 doubles, seniors
Katie Samuelson and
Brooke Wilkins rallied to a comeback win against Logan Eldridge and Jackie Gaine. After falling behind 2-6, Samuelson and Wilkins won seven of the next eight games to complete the Garnet's doubles sweep.
In singles play, Carlson, Wong, Wilkins, and Lane achieved their second wins for the day. Carlson secured her status as a double winner with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Noland at No. 1. Wong earned her second victory with a 6-0, 6-3 thrashing at No. 3.
Rounding out the Garnet lineup, Wilkins defeated Clarke 8-4 at No. 5 and at No. 6 Lane fought through a challenging 7-5 first set before closing out the win 6-1 in the second.
Christopher Newport picked up its two points at No. 2 and No. 4 singles.
Swarthmore will return to Centennial Conference play when its hosts Washington College on Tuesday, April 1. Play will begin at 3:30 p.m.
