SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Dropping only eight games in nine matches, the Swarthmore College women's tennis team (1-5, 1-0 CC) opened Centennial Conference competition with a 9-0 victory against McDaniel at home on Saturday, March 22. Six shutout matches fueled the team's victory and five Swarthmore women were double winners for the day.
Senior
Lia Carlson and freshman
Alli Wong opened the match with an 8-0 victory at No. 1 doubles against Winsome Schauer and Nina Breece. Carlson and Wong would then go on to win their singles matches at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively, both by scores of 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 2 doubles, seniors
Katie Samuelson and
Brooke Wilkins dominated Elise O'Meara and Laura Pollard, 8-2. Samuelson also defeated O'Meara at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Junior
Gayatri Iyengar and sophomore
Jackie Lane were both double winners for the day. At No. 3 doubles, they partnered to defeat Danielle Cloney and Nicole Arnold, 8-2. Iyengar then earned a singles point for the team, beating Arnold at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1. Lane shut out her opponent at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Senior
Epiphany English completed Swarthmore's sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles.
The Swarthmore women will play a non-conference match tomorrow against No. 21 University of Mary Washington. The match will begin at the Mullan Indoor Tennis Center at 9:30 a.m.
