CLAREMONT, CALIF. - The Swarthmore College women's tennis team (0-3) opened its spring break campaign in Claremont, California on Monday, March 10, with a 9-0 defeat at the hands of Carnegie Mellon University.
Carnegie Mellon, which is currently ranked eighth nationally by the ITA, took control early in the match with a sweep of doubles. At No. 3, junior
Gayatri Iyengar and sophomore
Jackie Lane battled against Utkin and Torres, but came up short 8-4.
In singles action, freshman
Alli Wong pushed her match at No. 4 to three sets. Opening strong, she won the first set 7-6 (1), but Martin rallied to a 6-3, 10-6 comeback in the next two sets. At No. 1 singles,
Lia Carlson challenged Pavia in a tight set, but Pavia would ultimately prevail, 7-6 (3), 6-1.
The match marks the first in a series of three that the team will play while in Claremont. On Wednesday, the women will take on the University of Rochester at 12:00 p.m.
