SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Swarthmore College women's tennis team (0-1) opened its spring campaign with an 8-1 loss against Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs on Saturday, Feb. 22.

Senior Lia Carlson scored the team's win at No. 1 singles. Carlson battled through a close first set, ultimately winning in a tiebreak, 7-5. The second set was another tight affair, but Carlson pulled away for a 6-4 win.

In other singles action, senior Katie Samuelson pushed her match at No. 4 to three sets. She opened with a first set, 7-6 win in a tiebreak before dropping the second set. Competing strong in a third-set tiebreak, Samuelson ultimately fell to Baird, 7-10. At number five singles, freshman Olivia Cheng opened her spring with a competitive 6-1, 7-6 (9) loss to Carlson.

Skidmore opened the match with a doubles sweep, but not without a fight from the Garnet women. Samuelson and fellow senior Brooke Wilkins fought at No. 2 doubles, but dropped a 5-8 decision to Alex Smith and Rachel Plevinsky.
