Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's soccer team dropped a Centennial Conference match to Ursinus by a 1-0 decision on Friday, Oct. 3 at Clothier Field.
Ursinus (4-6-1, CC 1-3) scored the lone goal of the match in the 19th minute off a corner kick. Sophomore Ryan Molyneaux sent a cross in from the left side that was initially headed away by a Garnet defender. But the ball made its way straight to the foot of junior Dean DerSimonian, who unleashed a one timer to the upper 90 of the net.
Swarthmore (6-4-1, CC 0-4), which had a 12-8 edge in shot attempts, appeared to knot the score with 11 minutes remaining in regulation when senior
Geoff Stewart fed
David Geschwind a dangerous ball inside the box that was punched in by the junior. Geschwind, however, was whistled for being offside.
The Garnet continued to threaten until the very end of the match. Senior
Michael Stewart had several opportunities, and
Michael Swantek had a good look from the top of the box that sailed high in the waning minutes. Swarthmore also had a free kick with under a minute remaining from the middle of the field, but Ursinus was able to clear the ball away and escape with the win.
Brian Gately of Ursinus made five saves to pick up the victory, while Swarthmore junior
Tyler Zon turned away two shots while suffering the loss.
Swarthmore will host Stevens on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
