Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Junior
Alec McClean finished a corner kick from sophomore
Billy Evers to lead the Swarthmore College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over McDaniel on Saturday, Oct. 18 at Clothier Field. The win earned the Garnet three important points in the Centennial standings.
Both teams had opportunities to score during a scoreless first half. McDaniel nearly got on the board in the fifth minute when Andrew Hofmeister hammered a header that got past Garnet junior goalkeeper
Tyler Zon, but the shot was headed away by senior
Michael Stewart at the last moment to keep the match scoreless. At the other end, Stewart also had a good look from the top of the box that was saved by McDaniel's Nick Over.
In the 59th minute, the hosts broke through with the only goal they needed when junior
Alec McClean headed Evers' corner from the back left side into the upper right corner of the net. The assist was the seventh of the season for Evers, most in the Centennial Conference this season.
The Garnet could have added to their lead when McClean nearly missed another header and junior
David Geschwind hit the right post with a free kick from just outside the McDaniel box. Late in the second half, Geschwind had another chance to increase the lead, but his penalty kick was saved by Over.
Zon, who has played every minute between the pipes for Swarthmore this season, earned the shutout victory by turning away one shot. Over of McDaniel (7-6-1, CC 1-4-1) made six saves to keep the visitors in the match.
Swarthmore (8-4-2, CC 2-4), which has won two straight Centennial matches to move within striking distance of the top five in the conference, plays its final non-conference contest of the season when it visits Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
