Box Score Swarthmore, Pa. – Sophomore
Alec McClean scored his first career goal late in the second half to help propel the Swarthmore men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Widener on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at Clothier Field. With the victory, the Garnet remained undefeated through four matches.
After a scoreless first half, Swarthmore fired a barrage of shots at goalkeeper Jakub Valdner and finally broke through in the 83rd minute. Junior
Geoff Stewart attempted the Garnet's ninth of 11 corner kicks in the second half and placed a dangerous inside the box that was headed home by McClean to the right side.
Sophomore
David Geschwind nearly doubled the lead for the host school in the 85th minute when he fired a ball to the far post from 15 yards away. The shot got past the outstretched hands of Valdner and appeared to be headed to the back of the net, but a Pride defender was able to head the ball over the top of the crossbar at the last moment before the final whistle sounded a few minutes later.
Peter Maxted, a senior, earned the shutout victory by making one save on three opportunities for Swarthmore. Valdner of Widener (2-3-1) suffered the loss after turning away seven of the 14 shots he faced.
Swarthmore (3-0-1), which is ranked 19th nationally in the latest NSCAA poll, visits Nazareth on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 12:30 p.m.
