ANNVILLE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College field hockey team fell to non-conference opponent Lebanon Valley by a 4-1 score Tuesday afternoon from Arnold Field.
The Dutchmen opened the attack early, scoring just 2:36 minutes into play with Lyndee Sheaffer notching her first of two goals in the half and game. The home team scored all four goals in the opening 35 minutes, which proved to be enough for a victory. Ahead 3-0 after Sheaffer's second goal, the home team added one last insurance goal in the final second of play. Lauren Mowery took a pass from Sheaffer and scored with 0.7 seconds on the clock to secure a 4-0 lead at the break.
Senior Nia Jones scored the lone goal for Swarthmore in the 63rd minute of play, her fourth of the season, on an off balanced shot through traffic that found the target. Three Garnet players put two shots on goal each - Julia Thomas '16, Aarti Rao '14 and Ursula Monaghan '17, but had no luck finding a hole.
Swarthmore goalkeepers split time in net, senior Gabby Capone finished the final 35 between the pipes with six saves and no goals allowed. Sophomore Ainsley Parrish had a tougher bout in the first half, but came up with eight saves in the effort.
For the other side, senior keeper Chloe Baro stood guard for 60 minutes, making six saves. Dutchmen defenders Lauren Bumbach and Katrina Reppert each had a defensive save in the winning effort.
The Garnet will return to Clothier Field on Friday, September 13 for a non-conference match with Immaculata at 4:00 p.m. Next week, Swarthmore begins Centennial Conference play against No. 8 Franklin & Marshall.
