SWARTHMORE, Pa. The No. 4 seed Swarthmore College men's tennis team (11-9) topped No. 5 seed Ursinus by a score of 5-1 on Wednesday afternoon in the opening round of the Centennial Conference men's tennis playoffs.
With the win, the Garnet advances to the Centennial Conference semifinals to face No. 1 seed and host Johns Hopkins from Baltimore. That match will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday from Hopkins.
Swarthmore jumped to a 2-1 lead after doubles, winning from the No. 1 and No. 3 flights. Juniors Preston Poon and Max Kaye won from No. 3 (8-3) while junior Anthony Collard and senior Malik Mubeen held off a late rally to win 8-4 from the No. 1 spot. The Bears picked up a win at No. 2 doubles (8-4) from Evan Lord and Alex Elbogen.
In singles, Swarthmore earned wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to seal the win. Sophomore Irving Stone was the first victor, winning 6-2, 6-1. He was followed up by Mubeen, who won at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-3. Poon sent the Garnet to the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over Tyler Arsennault.
Saturday's semifinal match at Hopkins begins at 11:00 a.m.
