Women's Tennis Topples Haverford 7-2 to Remain Unbeaten

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's tennis team (12-2, 9-0) earned a hard-fought 7-2 win at Haverford on Thursday evening to remain undefeated in the Centennial Conference.

The win guarantees that the team will be at least the second seed in the upcoming conference playoffs.

The Garnet gained a crucial 2-1 advantage in doubles play. Juniors Katie Samuelson and Brooke Wilkins earned the first point for the team, defeating Tong/Himmelstein 8-6 at No. 2. Senior Emily Rosenblum and junior Lia Carlson followed up with a 9-7 victory over Gallagher/Ferrara.

In singles action, senior Stephanie Chia earned a decisive 6-4, 6-0 victory against Tong. At No. 4, Samuelson picked up her second win for the day, downing Anderson 6-1, 6-2.

With the team up 4-2, senior Kelsey Johnson clinched the match with her win at No. 3 singles. She battled in two close sets, eventually winning over Himmelstein 7-5, 7-6 (2). Freshman Jackie Lane also earned a tight win, downing Donches in three sets (6-3, 2-6, 7-5) at No. 6.

After moving indoors due to darkness, Carlson earned the Garnet's final point in a match that lasted over three-and-a-half hours. After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, Carlson rallied to win 6-7 (5), 6-3, 10-6.

Swarthmore has one more conference match this Saturday against nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins. The winner will be the top seed in the upcoming Centennial Conference playoffs The match will be at home at 11:00 a.m.
