Box Score Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Suness Jones '16 scattered six hits in her collegiate pitching debut for Swarthmore but the Garnet offense was held quiet by Waldorf starter Holly Gilbertson in a 2-0 loss on Sunday.
In the brisk 1:10 pitcher's duel, surpassed in length by a five mile post-game walk to Bojangles by half of the Garnet coaching staff, the NAIA Wildcats (4-5) plated a pair of runs in the first inning and held on as Gilbertson retired 11 in a row to end the contest.
Waldorf shortstop Kate Martino opened the morning with a double to left-center, moved to third on an error, and came around to score on a groundout. Michelle Eden followed with a double of her own to bring home a second Wildcat run before Jones induced a grounder to first and fly to right to end the threat.
Swarthmore picked up two-out singles from Nicole Aaron '14 in the first and Clara Obstfeld '16 in the second, and earned a pair of one-out walks in the fourth against Gilbertson but could move the runners no farther.
After the first, Jones was dominant helped by some stellar defense behind her. In the third, Obstfeld stabbed a hard line-drive and fired in one-motion to first to turn a double-play. Later in the sixth, Samantha Bennett '13 raced down a laced line-drive in the right-center alley to make a leaping catch with some flair.
The Garnet will take Monday off before returning to action with a Tuesday double-header. Swarthmore will open with Daniel Webster at 9 before a rematch of Saturday's tilt with Mitchell at 11.
