Doubles Lead Women's Tennis Past NYU, 7-2

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's tennis team (1-0) opened its spring season with a 7-2 win over New York University at home on Sunday. 

The Garnet was powered by strong doubles performances and rallied in singles to complete the victory.

The team opened the match with exceptionally strong doubles play, sweeping all three matches. Junior Lia Carlson and senior Emily Rosenblum paired for an 8-6 victory at number one. Juniors Katie Samuelson and Brooke Wilkins earned an 8-3 victory at number two, while senior Stephanie Chia and junior Epiphany English captured the third doubles point 8-6.

Carlson and Rosenblum both picked up their second wins for the day in singles. At number one, Carlson fought through a challenging first set before rolling in the second. She defeated Masanto 7-6 (6), 6-2. Rosenblum also stepped up to a first set challenge, winning her match 7-6 (6), 6-4.
Senior Stephanie Chia became the third double winner for the Garnet, dominating at number four singles against Ziarko 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Jackie Lane rounded out the singles lineup, earning a straightforward 6-1, 6-1 victory against Kumar.
 
NYU's points came at three singles where senior Kelsey Johnson dropped her match in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 6-7 (7), and at five singles.
 
The team will now prepare for its spring trip to Orlando where it will face a number of non-conference competitors. Conference play will begin after spring break
