SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 23 Swarthmore College men's tennis team (1-0) opened its 2013 spring campaign with a 6-3 win over New York University at home on Saturday. The team was led by five singles victories, including a three-set win by junior Max Kaye at the third singles position.
At number one singes, junior Anthony Collard fought off a second set NYU comeback, claiming a 6-0, 7-6(3) win over Bhalla. Sophomore Max Sacks earned a comfortable 6-1, 6-3 victory at number two singles, while Kaye defeated Meltzer 6-3, 0-6, 6-3.
Sophomore Irving Stone and senior Malik Mubeen picked up the Garnet's two other singles wins. Stone defeated Dean 6-3, 6-3, while Mubeen earned a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Thangirala at five and six, respectively. At number four singles, junior Preston Poon dropped his match, 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, Mubeen become a double winner for the day, partnering with freshman William Lennon at number three doubles, defeating Smithline/Yee Lai 8-5. NYU picked up the other two doubles points, however it was not enough to overcome Swarthmore men's strong showings in singles.
The Swarthmore men will return to action at home next Saturday, March 2 against Stevens Tech. Play will begin at 12:00 pm.
