Men’s Soccer Vaults into First Place in Centennial Standings With 3-1 Victory Over McDaniel

Box Score Westminster, Md. – Seniors McWelling Todman and Chris Lynn each found the back of the net for the first time this season in leading the 24th-ranked Swarthmore College men's soccer team to a 3-1 triumph over McDaniel on Wednesday, Oct. 16 in Maryland. With the victory, the Garnet vaulted back into first place in the Centennial Conference standings.

The teams traded goals at the beginning of the match. Luis Calderon of McDaniel (6-4-3, CC 0-3-2) started the scoring in the seventh minute by finishing a pass from Jim Caulfield. Just 3:17 later, the Garnet had a quick answer when senior Jack Momeyer headed home a throw-in taken by classmate Jake Weiner.

Shortly before halftime, Todman was able to net the go-ahead goal for Swarthmore. The senior received a pass from sophomore Wyatt McCall and sent a rocket from 25 yards out straight to the right side of the net to make it 2-1 at the break.

Despite being outshot in the second half, Swarthmore was able to net an insurance marker before the end of regulation. Lynn tallied his first goal of the fall and sealed the final outcome by chipping the ball past Green Terror goalkeeper Zach Nibbelink, who charged out and was caught out of position on the play. Weiner was credited with his second helper of the match.

Senior Peter Maxted of Swarthmore picked up the victory by turning away four of the 11 shots he faced. McDaniel's Nibbelink suffered the loss after making two stops in the match.

Swarthmore (7-2-4, CC 3-0-2) continues Centennial Conference play when it hosts Dickinson on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.
