Box Score CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Junior captain Jack Momeyer scored the game-winning goal in the 65th minute and sophomore Michael Stewart added an insurance score in the finals seconds of play to give the No. 11/12 Swarthmore College men's soccer team (12-1-2, 7-0-1) a well-earned 2-0 victory over Washington College on Wednesday evening.
With the win, the Garnet clinched at least a share of first place in the Centennial Conference with one match remaining to play. The Garnet can seal home-field advantage for the Centennial Conference playoffs with a result at home against Haverford on Saturday (7:00 p.m.) or a Dickinson loss or tie against Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.
The victory also caps a perfect 7-0 regular-season road slate for the Garnet.
In goal for the Garnet, junior Peter Maxted had another stellar outing, turning away three shots for the clean sheet.
The first goal was born in the 65th minute from a decisive steal from Momeyer, who pick-pocketed a Shoremen defender and finished clinically. The goal put the Garnet up 1-0, and was a culminating moment in a game that was defined by attrition and offensive frustration for the Garnet.
The final goal that put Swarthmore up 2-0 - and solidified the win - was an insurance goal that came in the final five seconds of play, in which Stewart finished off a long run by putting the ball in the back of the net. The goal was Stewart's team-leading 12th of the season marked the sixth time in the last seven matches that he has scored.
Stewart's late goal came after the Shoremen lost two men to red cards in the 87th minute of play.
The Garnet put up 20 shots, and forced Shoremen 'keeper Tyler Cabot to make nine saves. Washington College recorded three shots, three of which were saved by Maxted.
Swarthmore will conclude its regular season on Saturday at home against Haverford College in the nightcap of Garnet Weekend. The match - which is also Senior Night - will begin at 7:00 p.m.
