Rath's legacy at Swarthmore dates back to the 1930s. Rath arrived at Swarthmore in 1931 after receiving a master's degree in physical education from Columbia University. She coached swimming and archery and served as chair of the physical education department before retiring in 1965. Her legacy continues to this day with the prestigious Dinny Rath Award, which is given to the female athlete who demonstrates the highest degree and consistency of achievement and commitment in intercollegiate athletics, combined with a high regard for fair play, and awareness of the positive values of competition.
