Max Miller came to Swarthmore during the summer of 2016 as the College's first Assistant Director for Recreation & Wellness and was promoted to Assistant Athletics Director for Recreation, Wellness, & Physical Education during the 2020-21 school year. In his current role, he manages daily operations of the Recreation & Wellness program, including the club sports, intramural sports, group exercise, and personal training programs, as well as facility operations and staffing of the Matchbox Fitness Center. Miller also coordinates the physical education program, including course scheduling, assessment & evaluation of courses, supervision of faculty, and collaboration with campus partners. On campus, he serves as a co-lead for the Swarthmore Coalition on Well-being, which aims to reaffirm the College’s commitment to creating a culture of well-being that values the whole person, is inclusive, holistic, and well-integrated into all aspects of campus.
Before arriving at Swarthmore, Max served as the Coordinator of Intramurals & Recreation at Villanova University, where he directly managed the daily operations of 30 club sports teams and assisted in organizing recreation programming for over 10,000 students, employees, and community members.
Miller earned his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and Psychology from Rutgers University in 2011 and his Master of Science in Recreation and Leisure Services from Texas State University in 2013. In addition to his formal education, he has completed the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Workplace program from the University of South Florida and the Mental Health First Aid in Higher Education training from the National Council for Wellbeing. In 2023, Max earned his CSAEd and CSAEd-CR. The Student Affairs Educator Certification formally recognizes educators who demonstrate competency in established domains, commit to ongoing learning and professional development, and comply with the code of ethics.
Max is highly involved with NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation. He is a Director of Competition for the NIRSA Championship Series National Soccer Championship Tournament. From 2020 to 2023, he served on the NIRSA Foundation's Board of Directors, supporting the mission of NIRSA through scholarship, research, sports officials training, and health and well-being initiatives for the NIRSA Family and campus recreation communities.
Max resides in Havertown, PA, with his wife, Randi, and their sons, Levi and Jesse, as well as their dog, Vegas.
