Mike Mullan -- one of the winningest coaches in college tennis -- began coaching at Swarthmore College in 1978 and has announced that he will be retiring at the end of the 2017-18 season.
The 1986 NCAA Division III Coach of the Year, Mullan has led the Garnet to 27 appearances at the NCAA Division III National Championships, including three national titles (1981, 1985, 1990). The Garnet finished fourth in 1991, third in 1984, 1986 and 1988, and second in 1989.
Mullan, a two-time Pennsylvania high school singles champion, played #2 singles and #1 doubles at the University of California at Berkeley before playing international tennis. The highlight of his playing days was earning a spot in the U.S. Open. A noted clinician, he has conducted tennis teaching programs in Afghanistan, Burma, Indonesia, Japan, Nepal, Singapore and Thailand. In his 36 seasons of coaching, Mullan has coached 52 Division III All-Americans.
Coach Mullan holds Ph.Ds in sociology and history, with the latter coming from Temple University in 2010. He also teaches in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Swarthmore.
