Karin Colby (née Brown) has led the Swarthmore College men’s and women’s swimming programs since the fall of 2015. Both programs have experienced a dramatic rise over her tenure, breaking records, clinching titles, and growing Swarthmore’s presence at the NCAA Championships. 

Colby has led the women’s program to Conference Championship team titles in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 the program’s first since 2002. The women have recorded a 69-13 dual meet record, including an undefeated Centennial Conference dual meet record dating back to November 2018. All 23 of the College’s records and 170 of 190 All-Time Top Ten performances have been established in Colby’s tenure.

The Swarthmore women have established Conference records for most points scored at the 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 Championships, and won the 2025 title by the largest margin in Conference history. Norah Rutkowski '28, Genine Collins '27, Elle Anthony ‘26, and Clare Cushing ‘20 were recognized as the Centennial Conference Rookies of the Year in 2025, 2024, 2023 and 2017, respectively. Quinn Weygandt '26 was selected the Centennial Swimmer of the Year in both 2024 and 2025.

At the NCAA level, the women’s team has taken off in the past three years with Kate Hallmark ‘26, Sophie Rotival ‘25, and Quinn Weygandt ‘26 earning Individual All-America honors while Erin Szuromi ‘25, Gaby Ma ‘23, Sophie Rotival ‘25, Ashley Wong ‘24, and Elle Anthony ‘26 earned All-America honors as members of the 200 and 400 Medley Relays at the 2023 NCAA Championships.

In 2024, Swarthmore posted the highest finish in school and Centennial Conference history at the NCAA Championships, finishing ninth as a team. The Garnet had eight All-America performances at the national championships.

Swarthmore placed 10th at the national meet in 2025, totaling four individual and four relay All-America swims. Genine Collins '27 and Quinn Weygandt '26 earned All-America First Team nods, finishing third in the 50 free and fourth in the 400 IM respectively.

In the classroom, the women have earned CSCAA Scholar All-America Team Honors for all 19 semesters with Colby leading the program. In the Fall of 2022, the women had the fourth highest GPA in Division III Swimming. Lexi Duffy ‘24 was named the Women’s Swimming Centennial Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2023 and Kyla Hallam ‘20 earned the recognition in 2020. In the past nine seasons, 20 women have earned CSCAA Scholar All-America Honors.

For the men, the team has claimed Centennial Conference Championship team titles in 2017, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. The men have recorded a 57-15 dual meet record including a 49-5 (.907) Conference dual meet record. All 23 of the College’s records and 181 of 190 All-Time Top Ten performances have occurred in the past 10 years. 

Having never won a Centennial Conference title prior to Colby’s arrival, the men have won six of the last nine competed Championships. Claiming the Centennial Conference Rookie of the Year awardees include Danny Castle '27 (2024), Cami Wilson ‘26 (2023), Andrew Karpenko ‘24 (2022), Ben Freeman ‘24 (2020), Jeremy Rockaway ‘22 (2019), and Alec Menzer ‘21 (2018). Additionally, Wilson '26 (2025) and Freeman ‘24 (2023) were named the Centennial Conference Swimmer of the Year and Castle '27 (2025), Karpenko ‘24 (2024, 2023, 2022) and Jeff Tse ‘19 (2019) were recognized as the Conference Swimmer of the Meet.

At the NCAA Championships, the men have excelled with Karpenko earning Individual All-America honors in five events between 2022 and 2023 and the relay team of Lukner ‘24, Karpenko ‘24, Wilson ‘26, and Griscavage ‘25 (2023) earning All-America Honors in the 400 Medley Relay at the 2023 Championships. The men’s program earned their first relay All-Americans in 2019 and 2020 across four events.

In 2025, the Garnet men recorded their best finish at the NCAA Championships in program history, taking 25th place. Wilson '26 earned All-America First Team honors with an eighth place in the 100 fly and Swarthmore had two relays garner All-America Second Team status.

Also excelling in the classroom, the men have earned CSCAA Scholar All-America Team Honors for every semester since Colby’s arrival. In the Spring of 2018, the men had the second highest GPA in Division III Swimming. Vijay Chhabra ‘24 was named the Men’s Swimming Centennial Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2023 and Jeff Tse ‘19 earned the recognition in 2019 and 2018. In the past nine seasons, 23 men have earned CSCAA Scholar All-America Honors.

Prior to arriving at Swarthmore, Colby was the Acting Head Coach and Associate Head Coach at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At MIT, Colby helped the men's and women's programs earn four top-ten team finishes at the NCAA Championships and capture consecutive NEWMAC team titles. In two seasons they tallied 26 program records, 45 All-America performances, and 44 student-athletes were named Academic All-Americans. One student-athlete was named the Elite 89 award winner and went on to earn the distinguished NCAA Woman of the Year honor.

Colby spent five years as the assistant swimming and diving coach at Amherst College. During her time, the programs produced 13 individual NCAA champions and nine top-10 team finishes at the NCAA Championships. During the 2012-13 season, the women's squad claimed its first-ever NESCAC title and finished sixth at the NCAA Championships.

Colby was an accomplished collegiate swimmer at Carleton College. She was a 15-time All-MIAC selection, two-year team captain, and a NCAA Division III Championship qualifier.

Colby earned her bachelor's degree in geology from Carleton College and a master's in sports management and a master’s of business administration from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. A native of Madison, Wisconsin, Colby now resides in Swarthmore with her husband Ryan, daughter Eva, and son Will.
